POLICIES -CASTING

Kemptville Youth Musical Theatre Company (KYMTC) are committed to the principle that no individual shall be discriminated against on any grounds other than, in the casting of a show, their own talent, ability and respect and adherence to the KYMTC contract of acceptance (see below).

Membership of KYMTC’s junior productions are open to all youth between grade 7 to grade 10 inclusively. Membership of KYMTC’s senior productions are open to all youth between grade 9 and age 20 inclusively. Performing members are selected by audition before a panel of at least 3 people, and are selected on their talent and potential without regard to sex, colour or creed. For each performance activity, a cast is selected from the performing members following open audition, and parts are awarded based solely on the closeness of match between the requirements of the part and the particular talent of the individual.

Any individual who feels he has been unjustly discriminated against can raise the issue in the first instance through his parent or guardian, and through this route to the KYMTC executive.

EXTENDING AUDITIONS

If a candidate cannot be found through the first call to audition for a particular role, the casting team may waive the age restriction. The following procedure will be followed:

A Call to audition notice will be placed in the local newspaper and on the KYMTC website for an open call to audition for a younger or older youth (depending on the special need*). If the role still can’t be filled then an open call to audition notice will be placed in the surrounding area newspapers.

CASTING

How is a play cast?

By its very nature, the selection of a cast is a difficult and sometimes unpleasant process for all concerned. The actors who audition are risking rejection, and usually most of them come away empty-handed. Some win roles and some do not, so it is vital for young actors to develop a healthy perspective towards what this process is all about. No matter how many times one auditions, there will always be disappointment at not being cast. Rejection is rejection; it goes with the territory. An actor, no matter what age, must find a perspective for the audition process.                     .
