Auditioning Tips
Helpful advice to make your audition shine!
Auditions can be an anxious and stressful time, but they are also an opportunity to share your passion and talents, have fun, and demonstrate that you can perform under stress. We have provided some great tips (see below) and there is also lots of helpful advice available on the internet.
Choosing an Audition Monologue
Stick to the list: Always pick a monologue from the list provided by KYMTC. We chose these pieces for a reason, and it shows you’re paying attention to instructions.

Choose a monologue that speaks to you: Pick a monologue that feels personal or exciting. If you connect with the character, it will be easier to perform with emotion.
Understand the context: Learn about the play or character the monologue is from. Knowing the backstory will help you bring the words to life.
Practice for timing: Make sure your monologue fits within the time limit given by the theatre company. Don’t rush, keep your pacing steady.
Ask for advice: If you're unsure which monologue to choose, ask a drama teacher or mentor for their opinion. They can provide helpful insight.
Choosing an Audition Song
Stay in your vocal range: Pick a song that you can sing comfortably. Avoid songs that are too high or too low for your voice.

Match the style: Choose a song that fits the musical’s genre or theme. For instance, if it’s a classic Broadway show, avoid modern pop songs.

Show your personality: Find a song that lets your unique style shine through. It’s your chance to stand out!

Keep it simple: Don’t choose a song that has overly complicated runs or rhythms unless you’re confident you can nail it. It’s better to sing something simple but well executed.

Prepare it fully: Learn the entire song, even if they only ask for a short section. You never know, they might want to hear more!

Provide sheet music: Be sure that the piano sheet music you provide is clear, complete, and easy to read.

General Tips

Arrive early: Get to your audition with plenty of time to spare. Rushing in at the last minute can stress you out unnecessarily.

Dress comfortably: Wear an outfit that makes you feel confident but allows you to move easily. Avoid costumes or anything overly distracting.

Warm up: Take time to warm up your voice and body before the audition. This will help you perform at your best.

Be polite: Treat everyone you meet with respect, from the Casting Team to fellow performers. Good manners make a lasting impression.

Don’t apologize: If you make a mistake, keep going. Most Directors care more about how you recover than the error itself.

Have fun: Remember, auditions are a chance to perform and share your passion for theatre. Enjoy the process and don’t be too hard on yourself!
